Sampige Spotlight

Ellarigu Namaskara and thank you for your time in reading up about us! Rather, we feel you should be thankful to us for volunteering to be at your dinner tables, providing the additional flavor! Here goes…

We, Sumedha and Raghu Baichwal have been residents of Cary for about 4 years, with our 2 kids, Surag (12) and Rishika (5). Before moving to Sampige-land, we lived in California for about 10 years apart from some short-term stints in Houston, Richmond and New Zealand.

Both our families are of North Karnataka origin, though Raghu was born and brought up in Bangalore (sorry, is still being brought up in Cary now). Raghu’s parents, from Hubli-Dharwad area settled down in the so called “Dharwad colony” of Rajajinagar 1st Block, where there have been incidents of Bangalore Kannadigas being converted to Dharwad ones! Raghu did try hard to convert our fellow Sampige-ite and his “chaddi-dost” Kishore but he wouldn’t give up! Raghu completed his education (B Com at MES and ICWA) in Bangalore and worked there for about 3 years before coming to US in 1995.

Sumedha was born in Nippani and studied up to PUC in Hubli before her parents moved to Bangalore where she completed her B Com. Her father is from Bijapur area while her mother is from one of the Maharashtra bordering areas. Some of the Marathi words she learnt from her mother, she (still) strongly believes to be Kannada words and defends them so vehemently that you would be left wondering if you missed a whole part of Kannada while learning!

We were married in June, 1996 in Bangalore. We met a Sunday afternoon and were married by the next Sunday and had our first child by the next 51st Sunday!

Our son Surag goes to Davis Drive Middle School (6th grade) and daughter is in Kindergarten at Davis Drive Elementary. They both are also Hindustani Classical music students besides testing our patience otherwise too! I hope you get the picture!...Kids singing away their “ragas” and wife dancing around with sticks in her hands…J

We are very happy to be here in Sampige-land and be a part of Sampige. We were about to settle down in Northern CA but we are glad we listened to some good things Sandhya-Manoj Joshi (Sandhya is Sumedha’s sister) had to say about this location and moved here. It was indeed one of the best decisions for our family. This has been a home away from home, providing us a great Desi-enough environment and a whole lot of nice people in close-knit circles to make us really feel at home and for our kids to call this their home.
