Highlights of the year
I record with great satisfaction the opportunity to have served on 2009 Sampige’s board along with some very enthusiastic and energetic individuals. It is with great pleasure I look back at Sampige’s 2009 events and activities. We had a stellar year with several major programs and achieved some important milestones. It would not have been possible to achieve this success without the overwhelming support and participation of Sampige members.
Being a cultural organization, so far Sampige has functioned under non-profit status, thanks to the efforts of earlier Executive Committee members. One of the long cherished desires of many, however, had been to have that extended to a tax-exempt status. The tax-exempt status will provide tax benefits to sponsors of Sampige’s charitable causes and help Sampige implement its broader vision. Some of those are: impart Kannada language to our children, instill its cultural awareness among our youth, and undertake a greater role in charitable causes locally and, in India - especially Karnataka. We are pleased to have accomplished the goal of having the tax-exempt status this year.
Sampige’s youth have been critical to the success of many of its programs and events. One of our goals this year had been to involve them in its various activities. Towards that goal we have had youth events that were fun, while giving them an opportunity to work towards social causes. To further advance the goal of involving Sampige’s youth in its organizational service and volunteer activities, this year Sampige became a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. In future, any service hours accrued by the youth members from Sampige’s organizational activities can be used towards this Service Award.
Another goal was to extend Sampige’s reach to Kannadigas beyond the Triangle area. The Haasya Sanje program offered an opportunity to welcome the Greensboro-Triad Kannada group to this hugely popular Sampige event. We were pleased to have them participate in other events as well, including the Purandara Dasa-Basava Jayanti Day and the musical gala by Shashidhara Kote. It is our hope that Sampige’s events and activities will continue to be enriched from the participation of these sister organizations.
Congratulations to the 2010 Sampige Executive Committee and, on behalf of the current Executive Committee I wish them a successful year ahead.
Thanks and Happy New Year!
